Mother, don’t worry. Everything is fine here.

Everyday things from 1989
From the introductory text of the brochure:

9 October 1989 Leipzig … a city … “the city of heroes and heroines”?

Our history is made by people. The particularity and uniqueness of every situation means that a decision, a reaction at certain moments can trigger a chain reaction. Despite all warnings and the possibility of an order to shoot, women* and men* from Leipzig gathered in the city centre on 2 and 9 October 1989 to demonstrate for freedom and democratic rights. As different as their motivations for doing so may have been, their decision was (almost) always a decision against their own fear.

The experience of a completely unknown, deepest solidarity among the people and the feeling of an infinite strength that they have and can have in common – clearly defines the memories of the interviewees as well as our own of this time. How significant and impressive the events were and are was reflected in 2009 – 20 years later – in all the conversations and stories about this time: full of emotion, concrete, down to the tiniest details, touching and authentic. Individual stories and biographies become visible and tangible.

The exhibition project “Mother don’t worry. Everything is fine here.” reflects women’s perspectives in particular. Women from different professions and generations were interviewed about their everyday experiences during this time. All interviews were open narrative interviews. In order to preserve the authentic character, the original interviews were used without filters in all texts.
