Active action for our environment had priority, such as the action of our working group in the Leipzig area: the Pleiße memorial march [1988]. It was about the state of the rivers, using the Pleiße as an example. I also actively supported the campaigns that were organised in Dresden – together with the Rötha Christian environmental seminar “Eine Mark für Espenhain” [1987]. I collected a lot of signatures and the “One Mark contribution”. That was the joke: collecting signatures was forbidden in the GDR, so there was a risk of punishment. So it became a fundraising campaign – and everyone gave one mark with their signature for the reconstruction of the lignite smouldering plant in Espenhain. The Espenhain lignite plant had a huge impact on the air quality in the surrounding area.
